CBD: Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Hero

We’ve covered the many ways that you can incorporate CBD into your life, but you might still be wondering what place CBD has in the skincare world. Why should I be using a CBD serum over a regular serum? Will it truly make a visible difference in my skin? Because CBD only recently made its entrance into skincare, these are all reasonable questions. A skincare routine is a deeply personal thing, and we understand firsthand that a product has to be truly exceptional in order to earn its way into your rotation. We’ve also spent countless hours researching, formulating, and asking experts all the questions we could think of when it came to incorporating CBD into our skincare formulas, and we’re grateful to now be able to share with you the why and how of CBD skincare.

The first and most pressing question that many people have about CBD skincare is: what is it going to do for my skin? Great question. The short answer is that CBD can make your skin visibly calmer, brighter, more even, and just generally happier-looking. And while that all sounds great, it’s important to understand how that’s possible. Perhaps CBD’s greatest strength is that it is known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. When you think about many common skin problems, inflammation seems to either be the root cause or a primary symptom, whether you’re dealing with acne, redness, or irritation. Even dullness and unevenness can be attributed to inflammation, as they are both often the result of limited cell turnover, a direct problem presented by inflammation.

As for how this anti-inflammatory action works, it’s a complicated process but we’ll do our best to make it simple. The cells in your body release small proteins called cytokines. There are several kinds of cytokines, but all of these proteins signal our immune system to do various things. As it turns out, there are both pro-inflammatory cytokines, which tell our body to boost inflammation, and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which tell our body to calm things down. How does CBD play into this? Multiple studies have confirmed that CBD is extremely effective at reducing the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines in our body and increasing the number of anti-inflammatory cytokines. This means CBD can play a massive role in regulating our body’s inflammation response, preventing it from getting triggered too easily and overreacting.

What does this mean for your skin? It means that CBD goes straight to the source to moderate inflammation levels, which will allow your skin to find some peace and calm and, over time, return to a healthy, balanced state. It also means a visible reduction in angry, inflamed acne, redness, and swelling. And while that’s a lot to look forward to, we’ve got more good news: CBD is also a great antioxidant.

What exactly is an antioxidant? Essentially, they’re compounds that act as shields against the free radicals and environmental stressors that cause oxidation in your skin. Oxidation is the phenomenon that leads to sunspots, uneven skin tone and texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. In short, we don’t like oxidation. Thankfully, neither does CBD. CBD does a pro job of reducing so-called “reactive oxygen species” in the skin, AKA the things that result in visible damage and aging. CBD also forms a protective layer around non-enzymatic antioxidants, preventing them from oxidizing.

Between its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant powers, CBD has a lot going for it. It makes an excellent active ingredient in any skincare routine, helping you to build skin that is healthy, revitalized, glowing, and resilient from the inside out instead of just superficially or temporarily reducing the appearance of discoloration, aging, and dullness. We’ll take that any day.
